Charlotte SHOUT! returns April 1-17 with music, culture and more

When Charlotte SHOUT! returned in a new format in 2019, it turned heads across the Charlotte area and beyond, spotlighting the best in local arts and culture.

So many were disappointed when the multi-week festival was canceled the next two years amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fast forward to 2022, and Charlotte SHOUT! is back, presented by Atrium Health and Bank of America, and produced by Charlotte Center City Partners.

Scheduled for April 1-17 at various locations across Uptown, Charlotte SHOUT! will feature nearly 200 events that showcase the creativity, diversity and resilience of the Queen City.

“After two hard years, we are so excited to bring SHOUT! back to Uptown,” said Robert Krumbine, chief creative officer at Charlotte Center City Partners.

“This is a unique opportunity to come back together, explore our city and experience the extraordinary talents of people from around the corner and around the world,” he said.

SHOUT! events will feature visual artists, dancers, musicians, poets, storytellers, photographers, chefs and thought leaders — including some of the region’s leading Black creatives.

Here’s are a sample:

Easter Eggs on Parade featuring Ricky Singhs and Lo’Vonia Parks

While you won’t find giant bunnies this year, what you will find are giant Easter eggs on display at Romare Bearden Park. The 12 eggs were created by 12 local creators, including Charlotte Lab School teacher Ricky Singhs and renowned artist Lo’Vonia Parks. Singh’s creation will honor the power of Sankofa with connections to Charlotte’s Historic West End. Parks’ creation will be a fun take on a Queen City-themed Easter egg. All of the eggs will be on display for the entire festival. Click here to learn more about the artists who will create them.

Queen City Jam Clash

If music is your thing, don’t miss the Queen City Jam Clash — an old-fashioned battle-of-the-bands competition. The competing bands will perform Black-centric music based on a specific year assigned them them. The audience will pick a winner, which will get a cash prize and the coveted title of “Jam Clash Champion.” This event also will feature live art exhibitions, empowerment resources, food vendors, small business vendors, DJs and more. It all goes down at Gateway Village on April 9. Click here for more information.

Can I Kick It?

Movie fans, this one is for you. Take in the action as cult classic and contemporary martial arts/action films are screened and scored (scene-by-scene) with a blend of Hip Hop, Soul, Funk and more, all mixed live by DJ 2-Tone Jones. The result will be a live, remixed soundtrack that complements the dialogue and storyline. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind film excursion April 9 at Victoria Yards. Read more.

Music Showcase Stage

Bring a friend and sit a spell. The Music Showcase stage at Victoria Yards will be the place where 25 local artists perform a variety of music genres, including Americana, blues, country, folk, hip-hop, jazz, rock and R&B. These performances will be spread over three days, April 1-3. Visit the Charlotte SHOUT! website for a full lineup.
