Charlotte’s Pride parade may not be until August, but Charlotte Black Pride is happening right now. Board Chair Shann Fulton said in a statement that this year’s theme is “BLACKAF.”

“Charlotte Black Pride is a necessary footprint in our community. We invite you to come out for a week filled with culture, fun and love,” said Fulton.

This year’s venues include Johnson C. Smith University, The Harvey B. Gantt Center and NoDa Brewing Company.

According to a release, Charlotte Black Pride Week brings in over 20,000 attendees from the East and West Coast.

Why it matters: Data from a 2019 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that Black LGBTQ+ students are more likely to attempt suicide than their peers.

Last year, Jaida Peterson and a second unamed victim were among six Black trans women murdered in Charlotte since 2016.

“We want this year’s theme to evoke confidence and encourage our community to be proud of who you are. We ask our allies to support us and join us for a good time and to better understand our culture,” said Fulton.
