The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a fatal truck collision involving a pedestrian in the University City on early Sunday morning.
According to a news release by CMPD, at approximately 1:56 a.m., officers responded to the 2400 block of West W. T. Harris Boulevard in reference to a motor vehicle crash call for service involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they located a 2012 Ford F-450 tow truck and a pedestrian.
The pedestrian, identified as 47-year-old Freddy Kasongo, was pronounced dead on the scene by Medic. The driver of the truck, Marcus Stewart,39, did not sustain any injuries and remained on scene, police said.
Police said the preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian was crossing the travel lanes on West W T Harris Boulevard, when he was struck.

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk or near an intersection, according to police. Lighting conditions in the crash location were dark and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing.
The driver of the truck was screened for impairment and was found not to be impaired at the time of the crash. Impairment for the pedestrian is unknown at this time.
The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing.
