What’s happening, Charlotte? – Q City Metro

It’s Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, which means plenty of events celebrating the life and legacy of the civil rights icon. You can go here to check out our list of MLK day events.

With the Covid-19 pandemic still in full swing, many events are virtual or modified, but there’s still plenty of things to do and see.

The Harvey B. Gantt Center has you covered — it has programs for the whole family — along with the McCrorey YMCA, back with its annual MLK Breakfast, but online.

If you’re in the mood for something else, there’s live jazz, stand-up comedy, and more in our weekend lineup.

Before I leave you, I want to share one of my favorite King quotes: “I came to the conclusion that there is an existential moment in your life when you must decide to speak for yourself; Nobody else can speak for you.”

Share with us your favorite King quote(s).

Note: Every week we try to spotlight events we think our audience will like. What are we missing? Let me know your thoughts

This weekend: a musical tribute to a Jazz legend

As a saxophonist, Will Campbell has long admired the work of jazz legend Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker.

Now as director of Jazz Studies at UNC Charlotte, Campbell wants his students and community to better appreciate the genius of Parker.

This weekend, in partnership with JazzArts Charlotte, Campbell will host “Bird Lives!,” four shows that will feature the music of the “bebop” icon.
